VIBE OUT!

Coming this Wednesday, 3.31, to My Castle of Quiet radio on WFMU

Corey Bauer and Phillip Gerson coat early-Cluster/Eno-like washes and analog pulsations with a coalescing layer of powdered concrete crunch. These guys have a thoughtfully executed plan (or seem to), as opposed to the perhaps more common—though often effective—methodry of hooking up some gear, slamming on a few pedals and hoping for the best. Their cassettes for Obsolete Units and Baked Tapes reveal an album-based mindset, where each tape side comprises a fully enveloping composition. Also look soon for a new C-15 on Cryptic Carousel (Corey's own label) of 2009 live excerpts. You can also check out some great vimeo sets from Fluorescent Vibes, first "Monochrome Splash" --- then this live clip on the My Castle of Quiet vimeo channel.

Yay female supremacy.

Good black bug's blood ALUK-FUCKING-TODOLO! The rock music that drug chains to the party—controlled, but always on the edge of the abyss, and with a good view at that. Thanks again to the band (on tour right now in Europe), and to Brian and Scott for making the airing of the AT set possible. Fucking eh! The rest was gravy.

Scary-ass new Starving Weirdos double LP is slowly killing me, and Sword Heaven caused some fissures of opinion, as they will do (check 'em out Sunday night with Sightings at Death By Audio in Williamsburg.) The new Darvulia is a hotheaded/cold-hearted stab at Christ, and new tracks by Pink Punching and Nurture Abuse pummeled and popped ears. Also, everyone wants to know who the hell Jack Lucifer from Germany is (me, too! more, more!)

The above image is from The Nude Vampire by Jean Rollin, who I can now safely say is my all-time favorite filmmaker, for the rest of my life...unless of course Catherine Breillat decides to blow my mind by doing a straight-genre horror picture...there's always hope. Click on the masked twin (ah! where is the other one?) to access the playlist and audio archive of last night's horrorcast.

Tonight on the Castle - Aluk Todolo, live from WFMU Fest, 10.1.2009

These very busy, talented Frenchmen (whose combined credits also include the black metal band Diamatregon, the insane hard rock of Gunslingers, and the excellent amourtout productions label) opened WFMU's 3-day music festival this past October at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Aluk Todolo combine black metal's gooey cobweb vibes and hyperdrive 2/4 with thudding, Krautrock insistence, and no messy vocals. Just when you're chugging along—big, ugly, stone doors open and monsters come out. Thanks to Brian Turner for coaxing AT across land and sea, and for all his hard work on the mighty Fest, and to Scott Williams for the recording. These tracks, collectively a 28-minute excerpt of Aluk Todolo's set, were remixed and wax-stamped by the band themselves. Please note: Per the band's request, these tracks will not be shared via WFMU's blog or Free Music Archive, as they are versions of songs that will appear on the next Aluk Todolo full-length album.

Doors creak open @ 8.

"Time enough at last." You know when that happens? When you're tasting dirt. There is never enough time for everything, so do nothing. Or never sleep. Your choice.

The black magician hates to lose a battle, perhaps because he so rarely does. When he feels himself losing, his rage knows no bounds. All hordes must rise to serve (their souls are damned, anyway—might as well put them to work!) I have my share of (very) bad days, but I never put a nail through my face and spit blood on a few dozen wax dolls. Does that make me restrained? Reserved? Controlled? Even human?

Click on Lo Lieh, badass extraordinaire, to access the playlist and audio archive of last night's horrorcast™. That's right, I said "™".

Starring Goblin, Physical Demon, Ken Timber, S.k.i. M.a.s.k., Music for Monsters, new Malveillance, Dodsferd, Vicious Beast, Lussuria, new Merzbow, and Rust Worship.

Telecult Powers and more on the My Castle of Quiet vimeo channel

So I've been taping gigs for several months now, ever since I picked up an iPhone. I used to rail at people holding up their phones to shoot stills and video at shows ... "Why aren't these people experiencing things in the now?! All they're thinking about is how great this will look later on their Flickr page!!" Now I'm the asshole with his camera out.

Still, I do feel that important things are really happening, especially in terms of the Brooklyn-based noise scene (though not at all exclusively, as you'll note from the selections I have up.) I first began uploading things to my YouTube channel, which up until that time was typically reserved for funny home vids my son and I make together. For reasons that will be obvious to most of you, I decided to pick up the whole thing and plop it down on vimeo. And yes, there are a few amazing clips back at YouTube, which will eventually be re-upped to the vimeo page.

Here's the latest upload --- my Kosmische brothers Telecult Powers, rumbling the firmament at the Nyack Village Theter a few weeks ago --- the full set >>>

Make sure to also check out Telecult's feature article in the newest Signal to Noise magazine. Congrats, guys!

Bringing back the good old days of what used to be "Connections" with some of the same beauties (bartenders) and frequent party animals attendees. ... the best ambiance, dance floor and sound system I've seen in a long time. ... WE NEED YOU TO MAKE IT HAPPEN, for lack of cool places to go on Sundays around here. If successful it may become permanent.

Me and PDD

I gotta say, being Professor Dum Dum's co-host/strait man was some funny fuckin' shit. Check out the audio archive of last night's show here.

We had no prizes, nothing to give away but the Professor's premium CD, fly-by-the-seat radio, some righteous metal, and this forward-propulsive maniac's quick mind and witty tongue, pulling my addled brain, the whole room (and hopefully a lot of listeners) ever forward. Talk about "without a net"! We actually made a few $ for FMU.
